Many of the couples usually faced with this sort of question when it come down to wedding wine selection. Today, we have with us Irene Tan of Barworks Wine & Spirits Pte Ltd to shared with us on 7 undisclosed tips to wedding wine selection.
How much wine to buy for a wedding?
If the venue is providing full bar service then the ratio of beverage consumption will be 65% wine, 20% spirits and 15% beer. In cases whereby only wine and beer are served, the ratio of wine is 80% and beer 20%.
A bottle of wine serves 4 to 6 glasses depending on the size of the wine glasses served at the banquet. An important factor to determine how much to buy is whether the wedding banquet falls on a weekday or weekend.
For weddings on Fridays/Saturdays, the wine consumption for a table of 10 guests is approximately 1.5 to 2 bottles and 1 to 1.5 bottles on weekdays/Sundays.
Keep in mind to have sufficient but not too much of excess wines for your wedding banquet. Of course, if you know your side of the family/friends are excellent wine-drinkers, then you should tailor your alcohol menu to have more wines!
Also, you should always try to look for wine suppliers who provide consignment services to avoid the issue of over-ordering or insufficient wines.
What type of wine is suitable for wedding banquet? Red Wine or White Wine?
It is always a good idea to have both red and white wine available at your celebration.
Red wine is always a classic crowd favourite and more notably in demand.
However the venue of where the wedding banquet also plays a part in deciding red or white wine is more suitable.
If you are hosting an outdoor reception and the weather is expected to be warm, it is recommended to have more white than red as guests will prefer a chilled drink for an outdoor wedding. For indoor weddings, red wine is usually the more popular choice.
Is there any particular type of wine to serve for certain dishes?
For western banquet, a Malbec or Shiraz, which is heavier in character, will pair well with the meat dishes like beef and lamb. A Chardonnay will be suitable for the white meats, including chicken, pork, turkey and seafood like fish, mussels, crabs and lobster.
For Chinese banquet, cabernet sauvignon or merlot should go well with fish and chicken. Likewise as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with the chicken, seafood and vegetables dishes served in Chinese banquet.
